the hewer

the hewer of wood is folding leaves
the fingers ache from the axe
most of the day can he shake off
the flies and can’t the trees

the tongue throbs at night in the teeth
the heart is still, not ready at all for life
the word is not to be known outside

there’s no other shelter ahead
and the trench is dried
