Die Welt

When you look at the tarot cards with their complex symbolism, you note with surprise that the archetypes they portray are universal. Both in the Greek and in the Egyptian world, from Inuit to Japanese, in cosmogonies and mythologies of all peoples their common inspiration can be traced: humanity had a single origin and will have a unique destiny, because in substance myths and the secret hopes of all people agree so amazingly.
When looking at the tarot cards you feel to know these characters; they did not only live in the Middle Ages, but also are living in our age, we know them as if we had always known: the Fool with the bundle on his shoulder is the same painted by Bosch, is the one we see sleeping under bridges or on park benches or leaving home and family to go to unusual places and dangerous. Even the god Wotan or Odin is sometimes referred to as the Wayfarer. This is the same character of the tales that at same point makes his own way, a child deemed silly who then marries the princess; in the Bible is Joseph thrown into the pit by his brothers: traditionally he is the one marked by God, distinguished by all for his folly. In Medieval times there were feasts of fools, and Brueghel shows us this wild chaotic energy in the famous picture that represents the struggle between Carnival and Lent. The Fool is the prodigal son in the Gospel parable, symbol of the arduous journey of all human beings that, through the winding paths of the world, are trying to return to the true home of our soul.
Thus we know the Lover that is about to be struck by the arrow of Eros, and this image was familiar to people in the Middle Ages, who saw it depicted on the walls of Gothic cathedrals (such the one in Canterbury) together with other characters: the Devil, the Hermit, the Emperor, the Pope and Death, the Juggler who displayed the content of his bag pulling wonders to amuse and amaze the inhabitants of isolated small villages, figures that are represented on sacred images, carved in stone of the cathedrals or painted on wood panels, canvas, walls, illuminated missals and books of prayer, on embroidered tapestries, carved wood and etched on jewelry, collets, gems, seals, coats of arms. Such a familiar role covers broader symbols, pertaining to every age and known in every country. It is likely peeling an onion: each layer covers another and so on, but in our case we are never sure of reaching the very final center.
Tarots always carry a little further and this is their mystery and their magic. They open the doors to a deeper level of being: it is like watching the sun directly, instead of seeing its reflection in the water. And, while feeling its warm rays, finding in that very moment the answers, while being in this barren land.
 


"The world is my representation":
here is a truth valid for every living being and thinking,
although the man only can be conscious of it, the philosophical spirit entered into him.
So, he knows with certainty he does not know neither the sun nor the eargh, but only being one eye seeing a sun,
and a hand that feels the touch of a land;
he knows that the world around does not exist if only as a representation,
that is always and only in connection with another being, with the perceiving one, with himself.
